If you have noticed that you are losing more hair than you should, iron could be a factor to consider.  Many medical professionals believe that there is a relationship between low iron and thinning hair.  Some believe iron supplements can reduce or reverse the problem.  While we are sharing information on iron, before you start taking iron supplements, it is best to consult with your physician to get a proper blood test.

If blood test results do show that you are low in iron, what could have caused the imbalance?  Several reasons you could be low in iron include:

iron

Taking aspirin or NSAIDs over a long period of time

  • Deficiency in vitamin C. Vitamin C is needed to absorb iron
  • Some medications stop your ability to absorb iron properly
  • Excessive exercise or dieting can deplete iron faster than you can replenish your iron levels
  • Caffeine blocks iron absorption.
  • You may not be getting enough iron in your diet
  • Menstruation and childbirth are causes of heavy blood loss, and loss of iron

What are some symptoms of Iron Deficiency to look for?

Dry or brittle hair

  • Loss of hair density
  • Pale skin
  • Fatigue
  • Feeling cold
  • Anxiety
  • Irritability
  • Restless legs
  • Depression

Once your iron levels get back to normal, it can take up to a year to fully re-grow your hair.  The good news is that you should notice the shedding slow down after your iron levels return to normal.

If you want healthy hair, keep in mind the old saying, “you are what you eat”!  Try thinking of a Thanksgiving dinner for hair-healthy food inspiration.

Turkey is a traditional centerpiece of a Thanksgiving dinner, but did you know that turkey is a fantastic source of lean protein and zinc?  In terms of hair, our locks are composed of protein, so eat LOTS of it!  A diet lacking in zinc can contribute to hair loss and dandruff.

Pumpkin, yams, carrots and squash (the orange veggies) are rich in beta carotene, which your body converts to vitamin A.  Vitamin A helps support the healthy growth of hair cells, and is great for the body.

Spinach was always Popeye’s favorite for muscles, but what else is to gain by eating your spinach?  It is a “superfood”, teeming with iron.  Iron deficiency plays a big part in hair loss.

Brussels sprouts are great sources of vitamin C and vitamin B6.  Vitamin B helps the body create red blood cells.  Red blood cells help nutrients and oxygen get distributed around the body and hair follicles.  Vitamin C helps the body create collagen, which aids in healthy hair growth.

Red wine is high in bioflavonoids, which protect the keratin in your hair.  Red wine also contains resveratrol, which helps to reduce hair loss.

So, celebrate like every day is Thanksgiving, and your healthy hair will thank you in return!
