SELECTING THE BEST HAIR TRANSPLANT TEAM

Selecting the best hair transplant professionals to perform your hair transplant is by far the most important decision in your efforts to restore or change your hairline. There are many organizations and medical practices, even some charlatans out there to sift through, and the choices can be overwhelming.

Let’s assume that you have already researched hair restoration in general, and you have some ideas as to what to expect…maybe even some questions. You may have talked to others who have had a procedure done, tried some of the medications on the market, even researched a bit on the Internet. The first step is to set up a consultation with a professional hair transplant expert.

The experience level of the team you choose to perform your procedure has a direct effect on the results you can expect. Why is that important? This is of ultimate importance to you because the doctor does not work alone. The technicians, who extract the follicles from your scalp, must be dedicated to quality and highly trained to divide up the donor tissue to create grafts that provide you with the best opportunity for thick growth. The division of the follicles is delicate work, done under magnification, to not damage the follicles. They will then place the follicles in the donor sites that the doctor has created in your transplant area.

Larger, national hair transplant chains, tend to have a much higher turnover amongst their technicians, in contrast to a private specialty clinic. You will want to ask the physician you select how long their team has been together. A cohesive and seasoned team will bring you the optimum results with regard to your hair restoration procedure.

At Hair Restoration Specialists, we have a fully trained staff excelling in all parts of the hair restoration process. We are not a “training center” and we hold our physicians, technicians and specialists to the highest industry standards. Each of our technicians and specialists must already be fully trained and certified, and must have at least 7 years of hands-on proven experience before they can even walk through our doors.

Experience matters! To set up a complimentary consultation with the team at Hair Restoration Specialists, call us at 312-806-2203 today.

Why choose Hair Restoration Specialists?? Glad you asked! There are many things to look for, if you want the optimum results after your procedure and the best experience before, during and after in your journey towards a better you:

  1. 1) Experience Matters!! Unfortunately, we live in a world where anyone can call themselves an “expert” at something, just by creating a persona on the Internet. The experience level of the team or professional you choose to perform your procedure has a direct effect on the results you can expect.

Dr. Stein is Board Certified surgeon with over 26 years of experience in plastic and reconstructive surgery and hair transplantation surgery. Our Clinical Director, Tatiana Maya, is a world-renowned expert who has trained in the United States and Europe, and dedicated her adult life to being a leader in the hair restoration industry. Over the last 14 years, she has been sought by the industry to regularly instruct “hair transplant experts”, physicians and surgeons world-wide on the latest techniques, technologies and procedures. We are highly skilled, whether doing a procedure by hand (called a Follicular Unit Extraction or FUE) or when using our ARTAS Robot, the latest in computer and robotic technology, to find the most viable follicles to successfully graft. Our Board Certified physicians are the best in their field, and our office is completely dedicated to hair transplants and hair restoration. THIS IS ALL WE DO!

  2. 2) Creativity Counts!! As it relates to hair transplant procedures, ARTISTRY is one of the most impactful pieces related to your overall look post-procedure. At Hair Restoration Specialists, we are fortunate to have true artists on board. We will create a natural looking hairline, specific to your face shape, hair growth patterns, and depending on your specific gender and ethnicity.

This part of the process, the creation of your hairline, is done in our office by relying on years of experience; training and artistic talent to create a natural hairline that will fool even your salon or barbershop! This is also how we have built our reputation for excellence, as evidenced in our before/after pictures and testimonials. We commit to deliver the most natural looking results, investing in the resources of superior staff, the highest quality equipment, creativity and pure talent to transplant your hair. (The photos are Before/After of one of our clients, showing hair growth just following and up to 12 months after his procedure.)

  1. 3) We Care About You!! Plenty of hair transplant patients found out too late that the “expert” they went to considered them to be merely a profit center. Hair transformation is our “Labor of Love”, and we treat our patients for life. Our reputation has been built, large in part, on our philosophy that our patients are like family. From the moment we meet you, you will see the difference in being treated by incredibly skilled human beings who care about you and the results you are looking for!

Other practices may rush you through the process, but not Hair Restoration Specialists. We take our time with you, and pay particular attention during the process, as to the direction of hair growth associated with each graft, and place them accordingly to produce a look that matches your current growth patterns, face shape, and bone structure. If we choose to work together, know that we treat our business like a specialty boutique, not a big-box store, and treat our patients like family.

We suggest you consider these factors in your search for the best team to perform your hair restoration procedure. In the end, your results, and the experience you have with us along your journey will make you happy you found Hair Restoration Specialists!

CELEBRITY “SECRETS”…HAIR TRANSPLANTS FOR THE RICH AND FAMOUS

Posted on: February 25th, 2016 by hairrestoration

It is no longer a secret that celebrities have been undergoing hair restoration procedures since the dawn of the silver screen. Oh, come on! You know you are curious as to which Hollywood celebs, famous politicians and sports stars have made the leap from thinning or balding to a thicker, richer head of hair or improved hairline. Some have been very honest and proud of their new look, while others opt to keep their restoration efforts under wraps.

If you have ever considered investigating a procedure or treatment for yourself, take a look at our list of the rich and famous that walked in the same shoes before you. You may be surprised with some on our list, and may be aware of others. The wonderful news is that the hair restoration industry has come a long way over the years, since the days of hair flaps and hair plugs. Until you see before and after pictures, the procedures done nowadays are natural looking and nearly undetectable!

HOLLYWOOD ACTORS (just to name a few…)
John Travolta, Steve Carell, Kevin Costner, Mel Gibson, Jeremy Piven, Hugh Laurie, Al Pacino, Dennis Miller, Sylvester Stallone, Mickey Rourke, Matthew McConaughey, Jon Gosselin (from Jon & Kate plus 8), Gordon Ramsay, Billy Bob Thornton, Brendan Fraser, Jamie Foxx and Nicholas Cage have all gone this route.
While we named the gentlemen so far, female’s in Hollywood tend to be a bit more tight-lipped, so we will take artistic liberties and look past the hair extensions, hair pieces and wigs. Other women in Hollywood have noticeably wide parts, receding hairlines, or visibly thinning hair. Khloe Kardashian, Megan Fox, even supermodel Naomi Campbell have shown visible hair loss. It could be attributed to low body weight, hectic lives or damage from bright lights or hair extension damage, we wouldn’t know, but hair loss effects even the glorious stars of the big and small screen. Even talk show hostesses who have had the guts to remove their wigs on the air like Sherri Shepherd and Wendy Williams, proud of their beautiful wigs, have shined a light on hair loss!

SPORTS STARS (again, just to name a few…)
David Beckham and Wayne Rooney (both soccer stars), Tom Brady (football), LeBron James (basketball) and countless others have all had hair restoration procedures.

MUSICIANS (a few well known names here…)
Bono (U2), Sir Elton John, Bruce Springsteen, “boy-banders” A.J. McLean (Backstreet Boys) and Joey Fatone (N’Sync) have gone the permanent hair restoration route. Britney Spears and Fergie have both suffered hair thinning, and let’s not forget our favorite ladies known for their wigs (and seldom seen in their natural state); Cher, Lady Gaga and Dolly Parton. We have no idea what the status of their natural hair looks like, to be honest.

POLITICIANS
The most famous politician is our current Vice President of the United States, Joe Biden, who underwent hair restoration surgery in his youth. Let’s not leave the lady politicians out though, because the current Presidential frontrunner Hillary Clinton, and former candidate for Vice President, Sarah Palin have both experienced visible hair thinning and loss.

The phenomenon of hair loss and balding effects men and women from all walks of life. If you have experienced this in your own life, we recommend looking at some before and after photos of the celebrities mentioned above. You will find the results to be miraculous, even subtle and natural these days. The most important things to remember are to find skilled and experienced experts, like Dr. Stein and Tatiana Maya (our nationally renowned hair restoration artists) at Hair Restoration Specialists (www.hairrestorationspecialists.com) to consult with you and perform your procedure, and to call today at 312-806-2203.

THE RIGHT AGE FOR YOUR HAIR RESTORATION PROCEDURE?

Hair loss can effect anyone, anytime, regardless of socio-economic status, race, religious or sexual preference or gender. If you start noticing hair loss, or male-pattern balding (women experience this phenomenon too), when is the right time to get help?

Teens and 20’s- Most often, when a person in their younger years notices hair loss, they will opt for one or more of a few responses:

  1. Ignoring the problem. This is easiest by wearing hats, hairpieces or using creative styling techniques.
  2. Over the counter or prescription aides. The most common options would be topical creams, oils, medications, doctor office treatments or even shampoos.
  3. Hair restoration procedure. Most transplant specialists will try to dissuade younger patients from having a procedure at this time in a patients’ life. In order to fully assess the viability and effectiveness of a hair restoration procedure, the consultant must estimate the patient’s future hair loss pattern. This can be difficult to assess because hair loss is progressive, and full balding has not yet typically occurred. The consultant will also need to take into consideration the long-term stability of the donor hair area. Again, this is difficult to do when consulting a youthful patient. Though procedures can be, and are, done in the younger years; most consultants will discourage this method unless severe hair loss has occurred and other criteria is met. As a long-term solution, the transplanted areas will continue to grow after a procedure, but the non-transplanted areas may experience future thinning or balding, which could lead to an unnatural appearance down the road.

If you are in your teens or 20’s and are considering options to reduce or interrupt hair loss, please see a professional, experienced specialist in hair restoration for a comprehensive consultation. At Hair Restoration Specialists (www.hairrestorationspecialists.com), we can guide you in the best direction to get the results you desire.

30’s, 40’s and 50’s- Most specialists in the hair restoration industry will suggest that these are the best years in which to achieve optimum results when looking to combat hair loss. Where the same options apply as listed above, at these ages, there is most often a stable supply of donor hair, hair restoration procedures can have the most natural and aesthetically pleasing results, and most patients who have opted to move forward with their desired solution are thankful that they can enjoy looking their best while still feeling “young”! For those in the dating world, a full head of hair tends to widen the net you cast. Most in their 30’s, 40’s and 50’s find they are reaching, or have reached financially stability, thus opening up more options as to the treatment to choose.

Regardless of age, we suggest you look to the wise counsel of trained and experienced hair restoration specialists to create a Master Plan to manage hair loss throughout your life. At Hair Restoration Specialists, Dr. Stein and Tatiana (our nationally recognized expert hairline designer), we will be happy to help you achieve your hair growth goals. Check out our website (www.hairrestorationspecialists.com) or call our office at 312-806-2203 to schedule your complimentary consultation!

THE EVOLUTION OF HAIR TRANSFORMATION PROCEDURES AND TREATMENTS

Posted on: February 1st, 2016 by hairrestoration

We can safely assume that hair loss has been an issue for men and women since the days of our cave dwelling ancestors. The first recorded procedures were called Advancement Rotation Flaps used to address head wounds back in the days of the Spanish-American War and WW1 in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s.

In 1959, Dr. Norman Orentrich first used hair restoration surgery to cosmetically treat male pattern baldness, and the procedure caught on like wildfire. At the time, Dr. Orentrich and his colleagues used a process of extracting rather large sections of the scalp to create individual “hair plugs” which were used in the areas where hair was either thin or missing entirely. The upside was that those experiencing hair losses finally had a way to reverse the process. The downside to the hair plugs was that the plugs were large and obvious, as were the scars that the process left patients with.

As the industry evolved, so did the needs of patients who were seeking treatment for their hair loss. Early improvements were made to the “hair plug” process, and Scalp Reduction Surgery, or “flaps” was born. The donor area nearest to the balding area was surgically stretched to rebuild the affected area.   This proved to be more natural looking than plugs, but the patients tended to need to undergo the process four or more times on average to provide the desired thickness and placement. Unfortunately, scarring was considerable, and due to the location of the donor hair necessary to perform the method, the flap procedure did not prevent future hair loss.

Around at the end of 1988, the hair transplant industry adopted a new method of addressing hair loss with a process called “Free Hair Transplant Grafting”. To address the scarring issues caused with earlier methods for transplantation, doctors began using a punch tool to take 4mm grafts. By 1991, the Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT), better known as the “strip method” took over the industry as a technique to address the issues previously causing dissatisfaction. This method is subject to the artistic technique of the person performing the surgery, so the results appeared much more natural. Linear scarring from this procedure was more limited than with previous procedures, however, strenuous exercise tended to make the scarring worse.

This led to the birth of Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE), which is used today by most transplantation specialists. This procedure is also based on the artistic technique of each transplantation expert, leaves virtually no visible scarring, and is less invasive which allows for a shorter healing time. Patients can participate in strenuous exercise once they have healed, and the end result is a very natural look that allows for continued hair growth.

Since that time, only three non-surgical medications/treatments have been approved by the FDA to address hair re-growth. The names of these treatments are Rogaine, Propecia and the Hairmax Lasercomb. They tend to stabilize hair loss, for the most part, but slowly the patients experience further hair loss. As a long-term solution, these treatments can be costly, not permanent and have physical side effects that prove unpleasant for many who chose these options.

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy involves the safe and effective method of using a needle to inject the patient’s own platelet-rich plasma into the scalp, utilizing the growth factors in the blood to naturally stimulate hair growth. This treatment is especially successful after hair transformation surgery to fortify the grafts and solidify procedure success.

With the advent of new technology, the FUE process can now incorporate the use of an image guided, computer driven robotic device, called ARTAS, that is even more precise, consistent and maximizes the growth potential of the grafts transplanted using the FUE technique.

Today’s hair transformation surgery, when done right, can create a natural look with results that fool even most hair stylists. Patients can enjoy a head full of natural hair that last a lifetime!

Why Do I Need a Hair Loss Professional?

Posted on: September 14th, 2015 by hairrestoration

Most men and women will suffer from hair loss at some point in their lives.  Some causes of hair loss may just be temporary and hair growth will eventually resume, but there are hundreds of thousands of people who suffer from hair loss that is progressive and will eventually render them completely bald.  There are many different treatments available to those afflicted with hair loss, but many are only a temporary solution.

If you are suffering from any of the following, you should contact a hair loss professional:

  • You are noticing a gradual thinning or balding of your hair and want to know your options for treatment
  • You have sudden hair loss
  • You see hair shedding in large amounts after you brush it
  • Your hair is becoming thinner and is falling out
  • You think a medication is causing your hair loss

Hair loss professionals are dedicated to understanding and treating hair loss.  Although you may be able to discuss your hair loss with your general practitioner, they are not going to have the knowledge or expertise of a hair restoration expert.  General practitioners will refer patients to specialists who will have the most knowledge for specific afflictions, and hair loss is no different.

The treatment options that are available for your hair loss are completely dependent on what is causing your hair loss and what stage of hair loss you are at.  A hair restoration expert has the necessary medical training to take a thorough medical history of the patient and determine what is causing the hair loss.  They will then be able to customize a treatment plan and let you know what the best solutions for your hair loss are.

There are certain doctors who add in hair restoration to their already lengthy line of services, but when you are looking for someone to help you with your hair loss, you are going to want someone who devotes their entire practice to it.  Only then will you find someone who has the most experience and the most knowledge about hair loss solutions.

You should not be afraid to ask questions find out how much experience the doctor has with hair restoration procedures.  Hair restoration is a big decision and you should make sure that you are working with the most qualified hair loss physician who makes sure to stay apprised of the latest and most innovative options for treatment.

Your treatment options will depend on your stage of hair loss.  For more details about our hair loss solutions, all you need to do is reach out to the Chicago ARTAS Hair Restoration Specialists and schedule a free consultation!  Please call us 312-806-2203.

Benefits of a Hair Transplant Surgery

Posted on: September 9th, 2015 by hairrestoration

There are many people who look for a permanent solution for their hair loss and look into having a hair transplant.  The cost of a hair transplant may seem high to some people, but you have to look at how a hair transplant can save you money in the long-run and what all of the benefits of the surgery are.

Those who suffer from hair loss try to come up with ways to postpone or disguise the hair loss.  Money is often thrown at wigs, toupees, hair thickening shampoos/serums, hats and topical solutions.  There are both over-the-counter and prescription topical solutions, both of which need to be taken on a regular basis or else the hair loss will continue to progress.  These temporary solutions are costly and are not going to correct the hair loss.  Over a long period of time, the costs of all of the temporary solutions are going to exceed what the cost of a hair transplant is.

A hair transplant is the only way to permanently correct your hair loss and eliminate the stress of trying to hide it.  Hair loss can result in a lack of self-confidence and can make you look older than you are.   Hair restoration can restore your youthful appearance and make you feel good about yourself.

Some people are worried because they believe that a hair transplant surgery is not a safe process.  Medical experts will assure you that hair transplants are a completely safe and natural procedure in which no special chemicals or medications are utilized.  Out of all of the hair growth methods, hair transplant surgeries are the most natural.  In addition to being a completely safe method to restore your hair, the results are incredibly natural-looking.

Worrying about your hair can take up a great deal of your time, but with a hair transplant, you are able to put that all behind you.  You no longer need to concern yourself about your receding hair line or bald spots and figure out new ways to hide them.  You do not need to wear a hat on the weekends and position yourself a certain way in photos so nobody will notice that you are balding.  You completely eliminate all of those concerns since you will have a full head of hair after the surgery.

It is a sad but real truth that those who are balding are often talked about or laughed at.  People who are balding may find themselves to be the topic of jokes from their colleagues or friends and this is incredibly hurtful and can make you feel older than you are.  Hair transplants take away that embarrassment because nobody can laugh at a beautiful, full head of hair.

The final benefit of a hair transplant is that you get hair that is very manageable.  The newly transplanted hair will be just like your naturally grown hair and does not require any special shampoos or other chemicals in order to care for it.

Hair transplants are the only permanent solution for hair loss and those who decide to have the procedure immediately discover that it was well worth the cost.  For more details about our hair loss solutions, all you need to do is reach out to the Chicago ARTAS Hair Restoration Specialist and schedule a free consultation!  Please call us 312-806-2203.

Why do Men Lose Their Hair?

Posted on: September 9th, 2015 by hairrestoration

Most people spend time thinking about their hair, but nobody spends more time thinking about it than those who are experiencing hair loss.  Some people think that the only reason men lose their hair is because of genetics, but there are actually a great number of reasons why they can suffer from this affliction.  If you are suffering from hair loss, it is important to know what is causing it so you will better understand how it can be treated.

Certain autoimmune diseases can cause hair loss.  When your immune system attacks your hair follicles or other important tissues for hair growth, it can cause a few different kinds of hair loss.  A permanent type of hair loss that can occur is called cicatricial alopecia and telogen effluvium is hair loss that occurs when the growth cycle of your hair is disrupted.   There are treatment options for this type of hair loss and often, steroid injections will be recommended.  Rogaine may also be an option, but you should first consult with your hair loss physician.

The thyroid can play a part in hair loss for some men and the thyroid is a small gland that sits right under your voice box.  It helps to regulate your metabolism by releasing different hormones.  Hypothyroidism is when there are is an underproduction of certain hormones and this can cause a man to experience patchy hair loss that is called alopecia areata.  Hypothyroidism can be caused by an autoimmune disease, birth abnormality or a surgery that involves removing the thyroid.

There are certain nutrient deficiencies that can contribute to hair loss and this can be the result of a dramatic weight loss, crash dieting, malnutrition or some genetic or biological defect.  The nutrient that most commonly contributes to hair loss is iron and people who are low in iron can have iron-deficiency anemia, which is a condition when your body does not have enough red blood cells.  Hair loss can also come from not having enough protein in your diet or not having enough vitamin B.  Changes in your diet may help this type of hair loss or a supplement may be recommended.

Physical stress and emotional stress can hurt your body in many different ways and may cause you to experience some hair loss as well.  When you are experiencing severe stress, your body is usually sent into a state of shock and your body gets overloaded with different hormones and metabolites.  This can cause telogen effluvium, which is the type of shedding that can also come from an autoimmune disease.  Most people’s hair growth will resume once the stress has been alleviated.

The type of hair loss that is most common and will not get better on its own is male pattern baldness (also referred to as androgenetic alopecia).  This is a progressive condition in which over time the hair follicles start to shrink.  Those suffering from male pattern baldness may want to consult a hair loss physician in order to determine what their hair loss solutions are.  The options for treatment will depend on how severe the hair loss is and what stage of hair loss you are at.
